Belur Math and Ramakrishna Movement

Belur Maṭh or Belur Mutt is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, founded by great Spiritual leader and reformist Swami Vivekananda, a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa.

Belur Math is located on the west bank of Hoogly River in Belur, West Bengal, India few kilometers away from the city of Kolkata and is one of the significant institutions in Calcutta.

This temple is the heart of the Ramakrishna Movement. The temple is notable for its architecture that fuses Hindu, Christian and Islamic motifs motifs as a symbol of unity of all religions.

  1. Good to know you are in Kolkata. I think it would be wonderful if one could organize a conducted tour of the different parts of Kolkata where Thakur used to go, e.g. Vidyasagar's residence, Keshab Sen's residence, Balaram Mandir, Monument, Shyampukur: there are so many hallowed spots. It is not necessary to go in to these places where privacy may be an issue; just to think that the journey undertaken is the same as that undertaken by the Master over a century earlier can add a spiritual value to the journey. During the journey, one could read aloud to the tourists the relevant portion of the Gospel or Kathamrita to keep the visitor's mind on an upper plane, absorbed in thoughts of Thakur.

  2. Nice post on Belur and idea behind it. Belur is the headquarter of Ramakrishna math and mission.It spreads the idea of harmony of religions and helps to develop harmonious personalities. Visitors should check the Belur Math timings before planning a visit.
